The rise of plant-based milks

Michael Elligett

There’s no denying that non-dairy milks are on the rise, it seems that every week there’s a new type of plant that has been turned into milk. Go back ten years ago and the only time a customer could purchase a coffee without dairy was soy milk, and now it seems we are inundated with choices! With the rise of intolerances, awareness of how dairy milk is made and how it is digested by humans has driven the spike in demand for dairy milk alternatives.

Nowadays it’s not uncommon to adopt a vegan diet or even just prefer your chai latte with almond milk because it tastes better. First, we all were introduced to soy milk, and then we were introduced to its nutty cousin almond milk, and now we are entering the oat milk era. These plant-based milks are being manufactured so efficiently that many of them are now indistinguishable from dairy milk. Some may say they add an odd flavour to their morning coffee, with others adding that it gives their cuppa that little bit more of a richer taste they never knew they wanted. Regardless of whether you’re vegan, lactose intolerant or just want a more sustainable option than cow’s milk, plant-based milks such as The Dairy Alternatives Oat Milk are on the rise and are showing no signs of slowing down. Now is the time to embrace change and perhaps encourage your customers to do the same.
